Using Trends to Bet on Rugby League

For punters who like to follow trends, betting on the Super League can be quite profitable. To come first in the Super League is a massive advantage, and it is seldom the case that a finalist in the Grand Final hasn't been a table-topper in the Super League.

It has to be said that the biggest showpiece occasion for rugby league is the Challenge Cup. However, don't let the romance of the competition lead you to believe that the underdogs will have their day, as this is so often not the case. In recent years, it has only happened once that the cup hasn't gone to one of the big four teams of Wigan, Leeds, Bradford and St Helens. Choosing between the four teams is not easy and punters should beware of lumping on any team in a cup competition where the draw is random and you could find your choice paired with a daunting away trip because of an unlucky selection draw.

Once the final is reached however, there is always a huge amount of markets available, especially the Lance Todd Trophy - the man of the match as voted for by the rugby league reporters - which is by far the most prestigious. It is generally safe to say that half-backs are by far the most likely winners of this trophy.

If you move away from the glamour and glitz of the Super League, a number of bookmakers' firms offer bets on the two divisions of the National League. These games are not shown on television so any research carried out will have to be done either by reading the form book, match reports or by going to the games themselves and making your own mind up about the respective teams. Obviously this is not an ideal situation, particularly for those punters who live in the south, miles away from the teams' grounds, while the team news is the key factor for both punters and bookies alike.

It is very likely that you will have to spend hours trawling through local newspaper websites, official team sites and fan forums to pick up any speck of information about injuries which could be the difference between making a winning and losing bet. However, you may find it worthwhile in the long run and it can be interesting to catch up on all the news anyway.

It is difficult therefore to get long-range advice with team news being such an important factor in National League betting, and it is advisable to be wary of teams who are forced to play maybe three games in a week because of fixture congestion. This is due mainly to the fact that most teams are made up of part-time players and it is not uncommon for players to work during the day and then rush to get to a game in the evening. Bear in mind that there is travelling involved in the away trips, and that fitness often plays an enormous part in proceedings.
